Port of Entry Application

1

Gather documents

Collect passport, employer letter, degree, transcripts, and supporting materials.

2

Choose your port of entry

Select an airport with preclearance or a land border crossing.

3

Arrive at the border

Tell the officer you are applying for TN status.

4

Present your documents

Hand over your complete application package.

5

Answer officer questions

Explain your role, qualifications, and temporary intent clearly.

6

Pay fees

Pay the $50 processing fee (plus $30 I-94 fee at land borders).

7

Receive your I-94

Your I-94 confirms TN status and authorized stay duration.

Airport Preclearance
Airport preclearance is safer — if denied, you can withdraw your application and remain in Canada rather than being turned away at the border.

Form I-129 (USCIS Filing)

1

Employer files Form I-129

Your U.S. employer submits Form I-129 with the TN supplement to USCIS.

2

Include supporting documents

Attach employer letter, credentials, and all supporting evidence.

3

Pay filing fee

Filing fee varies by employer size ($510–$1,615). Add $2,965 for optional premium processing.

4

Wait for receipt notice

USCIS sends Form I-797C confirming receipt.

5

Receive approval

USCIS sends Form I-797A approval notice.

6

Enter the U.S.

Present your approval notice at the border to activate TN status.
